The intention of this tutorial is to combine two powerful tools such as Gertrudis Pro and Adobe Photoshop to take advantage of to the maximum realism of a photograph and enrich it with the natural sensitivity that Gertrudis Pro gives to any image.
First thing you’ll need is a neutral background photograph such as a sky, plain color, etc. This is not an essential requirement nevertheless it will help the final result to be far better.
- Open your picture in Adobe Photoshop
- Create a New empty layer (choose “New Layer” from the Layers palette menu.)
- You must create a mask to trim the background. This will have a double function:
- Defining the work area for Gertrudis knowing that it will be visible in Adobe Photoshop.
- Cutting the original image from Gertrudis Graphics to make only visible the chosen zones of the image (in this example example, the sky).

Use the Magic Wand tool to select the approximated area of the sky you want to work with. You can use as much selection tools as you wish to make a more precise selection. Once you have finished, click the Add Layer Mask button. This will define the work area in an empty transparent Layer.

- Place your cursor on the Layer Mask Thumbnail and click with the left button and ALT key. This will let you see the mask in black and white. Select the entire image (Ctrl+A) and copy it, pressing Ctrl+C in that layer.

- Now it is the turn of Gertrudis Pro! Open the program and select New From Clipboard (Ctrl+Alt+N). Leave the software’s presets, and open the image.
- Use the Autosketch Tool and a large size brush to reconstruct the image in Gertrudis using the technique that suites you better. Scratch Style is used in the example. You must define the black and white zones very carefully. In the image bellow Gertrudis is working on the white zone only, since the black zone will not be visible in Photoshop when the mask is finally applied.

- In order to generate an interesting effect choose the Freehand tool. Apply Fixed color option in the color palette and work with black and white values. This is not essential but it will be useful for a better visual orientation. The effect will be attractive mainly when playing with ink’s transparency. Soon, when taking the image to Photoshop, you will use a translucent blending to produce diverse effects.

Reviewing:
- Use the Freehand Tool, directing the brush with the software help.
- Use fixed color mode.
- Adapt the ink transparency to create different color values (neither white total nor black total).
- Play and work with diverse brushes.
- Alternate different brushes and thicknesses and work on the image until you reach a pleasing result.

- Save your image selecting Save At Different Size option. Type width and height values in pixels of your original picture in the dialog box.
- Go back to Photoshop and open the new image you created at Gertrudis.
- Click on Create New Layer in your original file. Place the image you generated on Gertrudis in this layer. Select the window corresponding to this image in Photoshop, click Ctrl+A to select it, and Ctrl+C to copy it to the Clipboard. Return to the other file, and in the new layer, press Ctrl+V to paste the image from Gertrudis Graphics there.

- Now you see the work you did in Gertrudis in the upper layer, but blocking the image that was underneath. Drag the mask icon of the layer below to the Gertrudis’ image layer to apply this mask to the image.

- Well… the effect does not seem very pretty, right? This is the final touch: place your cursor on the layer that is applying the mask on the image of Gertrudis, select it, click it with your left button. Select the Overlay blending mode.

Finish!

I hope you have been able to accomplish this tutorial goal without any problems. You can try different blending options in the Layers palette on Adobe Photoshop and play with the layer’s opacity to obtain different effects. The key is to start from a good image, to have a good selection mask and to be creative with Gertrudis Pro to enrich the photograph with textures and outlines.
Gertrudis Pro 3.2 is a Free upgrade to all Gertrudis 3.0 Users.
Bugs Fixed
- Sometimes the style is shown in red even if the user didn’t change anything.
- The Load/Save Project runs at unacceptable speed over a network drive or UNC path.
- The save at different size ignores a custom background, therefore it is always white.
- Some styles has the lightness setting of the 3D parameters different than 30

I often use vignetting together with Gertrudis, works really well.
This little girl is just five days old, and I could not resist to
paint her, because she really seems to be happy to be in this world.
Got the photo from my daughter, the girl’s mother is a friend of hers.

If you purchased Gertrudis Pro after 1th July 2006, you qualify for a Free upgrade. Otherwise you will get 50% discount on the total price.
What’s new in Gertrudis 3.0
- Wacom Support
- Custom Background
- 3D Brushes
- Full screen paint
- Other enhancements: Better color accuracy and enhanced stroke rendering algorithm.
Wacom Support
| If you have a Wacom Device or compatible one, then with Gertrudis Pro 3.0 you can take advantage of the "Pressure Sensitiveness" feature, therefore as more pressure you apply, wider strokes will be obtained. You can combine it with the parameter "Width" in the stroke settings to define a base width of your stroke: By varying the pressure of your pencil on the board you will obtain different strokes widths. |
 |
Custom Background
If you wish, now you can paint over a different background than white. It can be a solid color or any image: texture, photo or any other kind of digital image (jpg, tiff, bmp, etc). When you load an image to start a new drawing, the background will be asked, also you can change it in the middle of a work.
This is the screen of the "Change Background":

Solid Color Background
By clicking the "Solid Color" check box, the "Select Color" button will be enabled. Clicking this button will Show a color Selector:

Click on the desired color to select it. Also you can change the "Saturation" of the colors, turn the "Saturation" slider to the left to diminish the saturation and turn to the right to augment it.
Image Background
By clicking the "Image" check box, the "Load Image" button will be enabled. Clicking this button will show a Standard "Load Image Dialog Box". Choose the desired image.
Once you have choosed the image you can click either on the "Tiled" checkbox or on "Stretch".
Tiled: Will repeat the image as many times as the image can fit on the project image.
Stretch: Will resize the image so it can fit in the project image.
If you choose "Tiled", keep in mind that a seamless image would be desirable.
Interesting trick: Choose "stretch" and select the original image as background.
3D Brushes
This effect let you add relief to your results. The 3D Parameters are located in: Style Manager | Advanced Settings.
There are three basic parameters which controls the 3D effect:
- Bumpiness: This parameter controls the depth of each stroke, as more higher values more notable is the 3D effect.
- Softness: This parameter controls control how hard is the relief, as more higher value, less notalble (but possibly more natural) is the 3D effect.
- Light Intensity: As more higher values, more lighter strokes you will obtain. Keep it in 30, if you don’t wish to distort the original colors.

Full screen paint
By pressing F10 (or it’s equivalent action in the main manu) you can go into a full screen paint mode:

As you can see, this mode will show only a reduced set of controls. With one slightly change: The size control will change the following parameters: Stroke width, Length and Size and Density.
Other enhancements: Better color accuracy and enhanced stroke rendering algorithm.
- Better Color accuracy: Some users reported color accuracy problems in large soft areas, like skin tones, or gradients. This problem is corrected in the 3.0 Version.
- Enhanced Stroke Rendering Algorithm: The new algorithm will draw the strokes faster than before, also the small strokes are drawn with more detail.
Now it’s available the Version 2.5: All registered users of any version of “Gertrudis Pro” can obtain this free update. Use the “Contact form in the main page” to obtain it.
